Are Your People Skills Killing Your Profits?

If you listen to the conversations from people who are not self-employed you’ll notice they will often discuss the problems they have with management.
Having two members of my family, my daughter Tia and husband Tama working as employees, many of our daily catch-ups are centred on this topic.
My daughter recently commenced a new position.  She’s 25 and has had experience with several employers since leaving school. Tia made this comment about her new manager ‘It feels it weird having a nice manager who cares!’
Isn’t that awful? This is the second time in eight years of being in the workplace that she has had a decent boss. Tia has worked in small and large businesses.
Now I have heard that story many times from other parents and young people about how poorly run these businesses are. It seems like most businesses are run by idiots!  A very sad state of affairs for our young people to see.
My husband Tama has worked in the Building and Construction Industry for 30 years.  He’s been employed in both small and large business.  This year he left a major construction company to work for a much smaller one. You’d compare them to ‘David and Goliath’ in size.
His previous employer was disastrous to work for.  To see how much money and time was wasted because of how the company was run really got to him.  His decision to finally leave occurred when he had a hard time being reimbursed for a physiotherapy account worth $55 when he hurt himself on the job.  They happily wasted thousands of dollars on the site he worked on through mismanagement. How would you feel?
I remember one time when they had completed a major building site and the office workers were invited to an upmarket restaurant with their partners to celebrate. The construction workers who worked long days and weekends to complete the job on time were offered nothing.
Would you go the extra mile when something needed to be done?
Both he and I cannot believe how well-run his new company is and how happy he is being there.
Tama was invited to do a personal development program recently which was held on the weekend. In all his years in the industry, this was unheard of.   He jumped at the chance to do it.  Didn’t bother him that the course was being held during his time off.
The common denominator between the thriving businesses is they invest heavily in their people.  In both companies they are taught about relationships…how to communicate effectively etc.  Their people will be much more productive and at the end of the day productivity affects profits.

The Final Word

‘Productivity’ is much much more than ‘time management’ and being organised.  How much time do you pro-actively set aside to train and development the people who work for you?  If you want your business to grow effectively and much more profitably, of course you’ll need to get yourself organised but make sure you don’t forget about your people.

I heard about WWW from Kathie Thomas and I'm glad that I joined in on my first teleseminar in August 2007. Ever since then I have learned each week from the weekly teleseminar speakers and I have been able to network with other members.
