Podcasting and Internet radio With Kelly McCausley

November 20th, 2007 . by Janet Beckers

I learnt heaps from Kelly McCausley on today’s Wonderful Web Women webcast today - did you? Kelly runs http://www.wahmtalkradio.com/ and http://www.momstalkradio.com and has been a podcaster and internet radio host for 4 years now. We covered an amazing amount of material in just one hour ranging from choosing your niche, what to do about competitors, using your marketing funnel and of course the real nuts and bolts of how to run an internet radio show and a podcast.

I’ll cover some of the things we talked about here, but you can get a  lot more detail from Kelly’s product “Shoestring Radio” which at $29.97 is a no-brainer. You can check it out here: http://www.wonderfulwebwomen.com/recommends/kelly3

The difference between podcasting, internet radio and webcasts

This  is something I’ve been unclear about. Here is the difference. Some of it really has to do with attitude!

The interviews and simultaneous webcasts that we run at Wonderful Web Women are called webcasts. Even though they are similar to internet radio - here is the difference:

Internet radio is often recorded beforehand and the format closely follows what Kelly calls “Terrestrial Radio Stations”. So in fact it sounds very similar to a radio program in that you have adverts, a few interviews and it sounds pretty professional. If you listen to Kelly’s radio station you’ll see what I mean. Can you can listen to an interview she did with me here to get an idea http://www.wahmtalkradio.com/podcasts/janet-beckers.htm

A Podcast is simply an audio (MP3) which could be your internet radio show, which is available to people to download any time by RSS feed. Examples are through iTunes and podcast directories.

How to create a podcast

I’m sure you want to get straight to the nitty gritty of how to create a podcast. We covered a lot of options but here are 3 methods that Kelly recommends:

1. Audio Acrobat. This is a great all-in-one system that allows you to record, stream and also send out audio (and video) in audio email postcards. Kelly uses this system for http://www.momstalkradio.com because it allows a group of people to all access the same system which is great if you create a podcast directory like she has. Kelly gave some great advice on how to set up a podcast directory and how she uses this product. I joined up today to check it out. Here is the link:  http://www.wonderfulwebwomen.com/recommends/audioacrobat

2. Wordpress Blog with PodPress plug in . This is a good system to use if you have recorded your interview using a service such as free conferencing. If you already have the MP3 , using this combination will allow you to podcast and stream the interview on your blog. Kelly gave some great tips on how to use this to get started quickly.

3. JK Audio Inline Patch used with Audacity software. This is the most expensive option but allows you to record straight on your phone without needing to ring a conference line. The sound quality is better too. Kelly gave some good tips on what to look for if buying one second hand and how this system works.

The tip of the iceberg

I hope this gives you a few ideas to get you started. Of course I can only cover a fraction of what we covered in the call today. Gold members will have access to the recordings in the members area in just a few hours and the transcripts, action plans and cheat sheet will be available within 2 weeks.

I’d love to hear your feedback on the call and if you have any experience with podcasting. The forum at http://www.wonderfulwebforum.com is a great place to share your ideas and also leave a comment on the blog (and get lots of links back to your website). Here is one comment already from the call today:

I truly had not thought AT ALL yet about using podcasting for my (still in the works) online biz. This has really gotten me rethinking all the possibilities that podcasting offers! I’m feeling a little less intimidated by the whole thing and will be buying Kelly’s package. Thanks! Sharon from the  US
