How To Make The Internet Work For You

I have had some great feedback from members who were on our call today with Kathleen Gage. The overall reponse was one of gratitude as Kathleen dispelled many of the myths of making money on-line and outlined simple steps to build an Internet business that would stand the test of time.

In fact the word BUSINESS is the point Kathleen stressed throughout her call and I can’t agree with her enough. We hear so much hype about “make $50,000 with your first campaign with one product” that is it easy to believe that making money on the Internet completely ignores the rules that work for making money off-line. It’s rubbish of course. Sure, an Internet business is fantastic because you can work from home and have very small start-up costs (which is why I love the Internet), but if you intend to make consistent income, then you are starting a business.

How to make the Internet Work For You

1. Commit to the long term. You are building a business so plan to build your business for the long term and not some quickly created (and quickly forgotten) project.

2. Invest in training - you will want to learn a lot of things yourself but when you identify an area of expertise you need to master (for example how to run a tele-seminar), invest in learning from an expert. This will cut your learning curve dramatically

3. Build a solid foundation - Kathleen shared that in her first campaign, she made about $50 and thought it was great. Now when she launches a campaign she makes $50,000. This would not be possible if she had not built up her relationship with her customers and with her vendors over time.

4. Identify your market If you think everyone can be your customer you will go broke. You need to identify who needs your services and who you want as your customer. This will allow you to focus your marketing. Another good point Katherine mentioned that is the most important characteristic of your target market. They must have the money to pay you! Remember, you are in business.

5. Survey your customers One of the most powerful questions you can ask your customers and potential customers is “what is your biggest problem with …..”. Once you know their problems you can find solutions . This may be by creating your own products or (especially when you start) referring other people’s products as an affiliate.

6. You have a moral obligation to sell . This comment is one that many of our listeners resonated with. If you have a solution to a customer’s problem you have a moral obligation to sell that product through your business. This is a concept I know a lot of us struggle with. This concept turns around selling from the view of “taking” to the view of “giving”

7. Enthusiastically pay your suppliers If you always search for freebies you will always attract freebie seekers as customers.

8. Treat the Internet as a business. This is the over-riding message Katherine shared with us. So get an accountant, find out about business and marketing plans. These are the things you would do with an offline business. The same thing is true for an on-line business

    Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing 2 very special people, Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski, who are leading a new frontier in Internet Marketing - soft sell marketing. You may be wondering just what that is and I won’t be surprised if you discover that you fit into this definition. In this article  we will explore:

    1. Who is in the soft sell community
    2. What is soft sell marketing?
    3. What are the benefits of this new approach to selling on the Internet?
    Whos is in the soft sell community?

    By Soft Sell we’re referring to all the personal growth, healing and life-enhancement providers who market services and products in fields, for example, that range from a wide variety of coaches and therapists, MDs, chiropractors and all other healing practitioners along with life enhancement specialists like interior designers, home schooling experts, financial planners, importers of women’s lingerie and table linens.

    Pretty much most of Wonderful Web Women are Soft Sell Marketers. And for us Soft Sell types, we can’t get in your face with our marketing because that would contradict what it is we are marketing

    Judith and Jim mentioned they are seeing more and more support experts – like Blog specialists, copywriters, and PPC experts – attending their workshops who would prefer to work with and support Soft Sell marketers rather than hard sell types.

    What is soft sell marketing?

    Judith and Jim had a lovely way of describing the difference between soft sell marketing and hard sell marketing. There IS a place for both though most niches really are more in tune with soft sell marketing techniques.

    Jim talked about the difference between ROI and ROE. I’m sure you’ve heard of ROI (Return On Investment) as this is where much marketing is focused. If you provide a service or product that increases income, you can expect to talk about the increase in income you receive in return for your investment in the product or service.

    But what if you are providing a service or product that adds value to a person’s quality of life, and not just their bottom line? How do you measure something less tangible? This is the reason so many service providers devalue their worth and don’t charge enough. Soft Sell Marketing speaks directly to the customer in terms of their Return On Experience (ROE). The emphasis is on developing a relationship with the customer, not just a transaction.

    What are the benefits of this new approach to selling on the Internet? 

    • Permits you to market and sell your products and services and remain aligned within your own personal and professional integrity
    • Benefits your clients and customers because they can trust they are being respected and valued by you as human beings and not just as objects with wallets and credit cards
    • Allows you to promote your offers without using aggressive language in your sales letters like “killer copy” and “obscene profits” and “if you don’t do this you’re crazy”
    • Grounds you in transparency, authenticity, and sinceritynot just as buzz words but as your real and meaningful intention and practice
    • Offers you the strategy of “persuasion in plain view” rather than subliminal, manipulative persuasion
    • Opens your consciousness to the difference between pitching vs presenting, manipulating vs inviting
    • Shows you that you can make a substantial income while still being a spiritually grounded Soft Sell marketer

    One of the most common questions I get asked is how do you convince Industry experts to agree to be interviewed by you, and then how to convince them to promote you to their lists. Even more importantly, how do you do this if you are an unknown and have no list of your own at all?

    There is a real strategy to doing this effectively but you can definitely replicate it in your own niche. When I started Wonderful Web Women I had no list (well, about 50 friends and relatives) because I had sold my previous business, along with the list. I was an unknown and had never met most of the women I interviewed. There are a lot of techniques I have developed which I cover in detail in my workshops but here is an outline to get you started:

    5 steps to convince experts to partner with you

    #1: Write a wish list of experts you would LOVE to interview if you could wave a magic wand and have the most successful and inspiring people.

    I searched on Google, checked out www.gurudaq.com, went to internet marketing events and joined different speaker’s lists

    #2: Go for the biggest names FIRST.

    I know this seems crazy. After all, they don’t know you and logic would say to start with someone talented but not well known, and work your way up. You MUST start big. Read on to find out why.

    #3: Communicate clearly what is in it for them and you

    Money is not usually what motivates industry experts. After all, what they will make from joint venturing with you is probably peanuts for them. There are usually less tangible benefits for them. This is what I found really motivated the women who supported the launch of Wonderful Web Women:

    1. They want to promote their business and latest projects

    2. They are genuinely passionate about what they do and love to share

    and, the biggest motivator of all……….

    1. They were all genuinely passionate about inspiring and supporting women entrepreneurs.

    Address these major motivators in your communication. Be clear, honest and brief (they are busy).

    #4: When you have one agreement, let the rest know

    This is important. People want to know they will be seen in good company and will often wait to see who else agrees first. That’s why I say go for the biggest name first. Once you have someone influential, the others will agree you are credible and be happy to join. You can even say “this is who else I have asked”, even if they haven’t agreed yet, and this will be enough to convince some that you are serious.

    So go for the big fish first. If they say ”no” what have you lost? Nothing.

    #5: Insist each speaker promotes the entire line up of speakers to their list, 2 weeks (and again one week) before you launch

    This is the basis of your list building. Each speaker is helping each other to have new listeners on each call. They are supporting each other as much as they are supporting you. You must stress that they are supporting the other experts. This is the hardest part as they are busy and may not intend to forget your promotion but it gets lost in how much else they have going on. Be persistent and do as much as you can to help them (write the emails, make promotional videos or audios if you can)

    Well that’s just the start, you have to do the interviews yet, but this is the hardest, and most important part done.

Today Charly interviewed me about the process I used to launch Wonderful Web Women so quickly when I  had no list, no reputation and no product (and no idea really). We covered so much, from how to find experts, how to convince them to support you, how to build your list quickly, right through to which software to use, how to create multiple products from a one hour interview and also touched on effective interview techniques. Pheww! That’s quite a lot really.
