I was in the process of turning my PC off when your email came through, and the heading was so intriguing I had to click the link and watch.

I like the idea of filtering out the clients you don’t want to work with. I’ve also heard of some marketers putting obstacles in the way to stop people from contacting them unless they are very motivated.

Janet, I don’t think i’d EVER have described you as tough love. A motivator, structured and action oriented yes, but tough love no….

  2. Thank you Janet.
I needed to hear this as a life message as well as for business.

  3. Rock on! You hit the nail on the head with this one Janet. You are spot on with the message of making sure we are clear on who we do and who we do not want to work with.; who we resonate with.

    Great job.

    Hi Janet,
Fantastic! Using language is such a powerful way of ‘filtering’ or repelling clients. I’m a big one on being inclusive – I hate thinking anyone will feel rejected by me – so I have found using specific language the perfect way for me to get past that and it allows for people to filter themselves.
As you said, they will be attracted to work with you – or not.
Thanks also for the reminder to ‘get off the fence’! I have been known to get splinters at times!
If keeping me accountable and on track is you giving out ‘tough love’ then keep it coming Janet!
    Louise

    • I think we all hate the idea of feeling rejected but also rejecting people too. It’s awful to feel you have rejected someone. But if you’re not aligned, you’ll never be able to help them anyway. I loved watching you at our retreats Louise when you started talking about what you stand for in business and what you are absolutely against. Your body language was incredibly powerful. It made you think “this woman will protect me against the sharks in her industry, I have no doubt”. No splinters in your bum when you do that :)

Thanks Janet. I’ll soon be launching my Video Made Easy product and I won’t be doing any ‘tough love’ with it as i believe it will help anyone who wants to make and use videos in their business.

BUT, thank you for the message to remind me that I want to be drawing on my 20 years as a Training Consultant and my 30 years of personal development courses and journey to challenge people to be more than they are and to take the risk and leap of faith to grow. So I’m sure there’ll be some who’ll find me too challenging to their comfort zone but others will resonate and be inspired to stretch and grow (as they do with you and WWW)

PS I’m going to buy a leather outfit and handcuffs for our next ‘tough love’ coaching phone call :-)

  6. Thanks Janet a powerful message and as you said a liberating one …

  7. Thanks Janet, great post! I think we all reach a point in our business where we realise who we DON’T want to work with and want to fast track those people out of our circle of influence. I hope that everyone watching can grasp the importance of what you are suggesting which saves a huge amount of wasted time, energy and frustration!!

I’m still not yet doing business with a web presence. I haven’t had to as my work is still one-on-one, very comprehensive and individualized, and long term (as in forever once a happy customer). So this may not be so relevant to your audience. I am considering the web for training and credentialing other financial planners/coaches in the holistic method I’ve developed that absolutely rocks people’s notion of wealth and empowers them, so I can leverage myself and expand my reach.

When I approach other internet businesses by email or telephone because I feel a resonance with them personally or professionally and want to explore an opportunity for them to be part of the credentialing program (a potentially amazing opportunity) I most often get no response or a rejection before there is a conversation because I do not have a website or a “list” and am not a potential paying customer.

I think it’s important in these amazing days ahead that resonance with someone go beyond whether they may pay us in the short term. Resonance will lead us to opportunities are human brains cannot fathom if our intention is to serve our world in the highest way possible during this evolutionary quickening. So resonance first. Analysis second.

So far, my most amazing creation buddies have come from pure resonance and not analysis of the financial value to me. Just a word of caution from a non-internet business owner looking at the sometimes less than intimate cyber world.

I’m a still of yours though. Somehow you convey warmth and caring beyond my lack of potential to be a big internet marketer. Thanks for “listening”.

  9. It’s a good point you’ve made about resonance. You also have to keep in mind though, when approaching other businesses, they often will want to have had a chance to get to know you first before being approached for a business opportunity. Then when you do you need to be very clear about what is in it for the other person, what is in it for you and the expectations of both parties.
Many of us online with a big profile are approached so many times to support start ups. There are so many amazing opportunities that cross our virtual desk and also a lot of opportunities that the other person is very passionate about but does not tick enough boxes for us to be an attractive investment of our time.
By the way, if you have a system you know that works and will get results for others, then this is the perfect thing for you to be creating your online business around.
Have you read my Success Quadrant Blueprint? It has an outline and checklist for you to follow on how to do this. Can you get it after completing the Quadrant Quiz, so you know which checklist to use. http://www.thequadrantquiz.com.

  10. Hey If I don’t reply to your comment in the next few days it’s because I’m camping (in the rain). I still love ya and I’ll come back and comment on my return.

  11. Patricia Aine Dee says:

Thanks Janet. I totally understand what you’re saying. I’m not a start up – I guess I am an unusual Super Star (love the title – great info by the way) because I don’t want to use a different product delivery model (as in automate it or even do group coaching) until I’ve trained more folks in the method. Kind of a Catch 22. But a great problem to have. No complaining here! Don’t need to make more money – just want to impact more people through an essentially one-on-one method.

Will look over your program more thoroughly and take my cyber blinders off.

Stay dry (as in rain, not alcohol). I’m a fan even without a web presence!

    • Hey Patricia, what you are planning is actually high integrity planning. It’s actually one of the steps I include in my Shine program, ie to actually beta test on enough people your system so you can say with integrity it works before you “mass produce”. This is not necessary with all signature systems but if you are going to be developing a program that promises an end result, you can very confidently market it if you know you have taken people through it one-on-one and (assuming they actually implement everything) it gets results. The real challenge is to know when you have taken enough people through 1 on 1 and then roll it out into a group program. (Many people never take that step). Good luck.

    • Dry? Just returned. Fortunately most of the rain was overnight (with strong winds). The days were absolutely glorious, although I am now quite sunburnt :(

  12. Cate says:

Excellent video Janet, a lot of teachers don’t make this clear enough. I received an email this week with the title “keeping the icky people out of the tent” (I did open it though, so the provocative language served its purpose.

I feel this is very much based on your positioning and personal brand, understanding yourself and who you serve. Once this is very clear, an exercise in forming a brand vocabulary (using vivid language) and interesting metaphors is very useful too. This becomes the basis of your message so that people can easily identify if they are “in” or “out”.

The wrong people still occassionally do knock on your tent door, but I’ve discovered with all my businesses to trust my gut and turn down business that isn’t right for us and at times it is really hard to do, but that is exactly how you build a valuable and differentiated brand.

Thanks again Janet, a really good topic.

    • Love your point about Brand Vocabulary. This is where it starts to get fun too and sets you apart from everyone else. Even if the process you use is similar to your competitors, simply using a signature branding language and way of explaining it, sets you apart from the rest.

  13. Claire says:

    Thank you Janet.

Your comments reminded of an incident when I was being assessed during my coaching training. The assessor had listened to one of my live coaching sessions and said that she thought my quesions were a “bit pointy”. When I asked her what she meant by that she said that it sounded like I was interrogating the client.
While I toned down my style a bit, the more direct approach works for a lot of people and that is what I prefer.

P.S. I am a Parole Officer during the day so maybe that explains it :) )

  14. Claire a parole officer! Girl I’d be milking that in my positioning. Take no prisoners….

  15. I know that I’m a diplomat… AND, I’m now VERY aware of the kind of people that
I will and will not work with…

What’s exciting is that, in the past, I might have felt and responded angrily to
the people that I didn’t want to work with – and worked with them anyway…

Now, I know that I can HAPPILY choose what is best for me and, in doing go,
will be the best for everyone else, too :)

This is my first post and first experience with your site and I’m thrilled.

Thank you so much for being here… How does it get any better than this?
    Hugs Karen
