A few months ago I boarded a plane to groovy Byron Bay to meet up with 4 entrepreneurial girlfriends. Once per year we meet for a retreat mastermind to work on our businesses. Can you relate to this? You want to get fit (and not be embarrassed in a bikini or even a neck-to-knee poncho) and decide you will start running of a morning. You buy the new running gear, set the alarm for sunrise and steel yourself for the discipline you will need to start your new fitness regime.

Morning comes, the alarm goes off and you roll back over and go to sleep. Tomorrow you’ll start.

If you had to meet a friend or a personal trainer to run together you would have forced yourself out of bed. You don’t want to let them down and besides, they’ll remind you how slack you are!

Sometimes you get the most profound business lessons from the most unexpected sources. Last week my 13 year old son left his lunch at home. He only had $3 in his wallet and really wanted to buy a burger for lunch but had a shortfall. Instead of borrowing money or settling for something less yummy he solved the problem like a true entrepreneur.  The result? He got the burger, a drink and came home with a profit! Us entrepreneurs can be brilliant at setting goals, writing lists and working hard to reach those goals. Then when we complete the task, we wipe our brows and set our sights on the next thing. But there is an important step missing. Too often we forget to celebrate.

But then… can you relate to this? We start thinking “this is a little milestone, I’ll really celebrate when I’ve achieved XYZ” and we never really acknowledge how wonderful each step is.

Do you work well under pressure? If you’re like me, when you’re given a long time to get something done you take as long as you’re given. Enter the Day Dream Zone! But if I have a tight deadline I’m incredibly focused and always seem to get it done (by the skin of my teeth). So I use a technique to fool my brain so I can get heaps more done.

Last week we celebrated 25 years together in our own unique way. When we weren’t kayaking in the ocean and creeks of Patonga on The Central Coast we were found sitting in our spa bath, drinking champagne and eating gourmet food.

I can honestly say I’m more in love now than I was all those years ago and people ask me often what is our secret?

I’m sure there are many reasons we are so happy but I think the number one reason is we are both serious about fun!

Having fun is one of my personal values I also bring to business and is the number one thing I evaluate all opportunities against.

Which is why I can also say I am more in love with my business now than I was 3 and a half years ago.

So my question for you today is…what is your number one value in your relationships and in your business? Take a good hard look and ask yourself, “am I really living this value”? If you feel like you’ve lost the romance with your business, focusing on this value may be just the thing it needs.

I understand that by having a business name different to my own name could be important when selling the business. But it’s a lot of work to run two websites and keep up with seo / marketing etc etc…in many cases people forget a business name but remember a personal name.

Thanks for such a great question Vanessa. I know this is a dilemma a lot of business people face, especially if they are solo-preneurs or lead a small team.Before I answer, let me ask YOU a question first.

What is your long-term vision for your business and more importantly, for yourself?

1. Do you want your career to be personality driven and your products and services to be grown around your personal brand? This means you are really passionate about your field of expertise and are unlikely to move into another niche. You don’t really care if, when you decide to move into something else, your business loses it’s brand. This is really attractive if you have a strong personal story you build your books, courses and services around. It is particulary attractive for professional speakers.

2. Or do you want the flexibility to expand into different areas of expertise and be able to sell the business you have created or build a team to deliver the products and services while you move into new fields?

It doesn’t need to be either/or

Often, even if you build a business brand separate to your own identity, your personal identity can still be closely aligned, even if you didn’t mean it to be. This is because people like to do business with people they like and know so you need to have a person, or at least a culture in your business, people can relate to.

This is something I resisted for quite a while. I built Wonderful Web Women so it would be a separate identity to me and the focus was really meant to be on the experts I interviewed, not me. However, I found that every time I injected a more personal touch in my communication, the engagement of my customers really increased. Engagement leads to cash by the way! Eventually I accepted that it was OK to be a very visible and identifiable personality in my business and not distract from the overall company brand.

My company and brand will continue to grow and eventually there will be an expanded network of Wonderful Web Mentors. The brand will still have my style, values and leadership but it will still have a separate identity. Just like Virgin is linked to Sir Richard Branson but we all know Virgin is bigger than just him. (I had to mention him, he is one of my big influencers).

So the same can happen with your company. It can still have it’s own brand and continue to grow and serve more people than you could do on your own. It will still have your influence, values and personality injected in your marketing. But you can have your own separate identity without confusing your customers.

Short answer?

I recommend you have 2 web sites or at least own 2 domains.

To start with, just have your personal domain name and redirect it so it goes to a page on your business site which has your biography on it. Just make sure you own your name url. You don’t need a whole site about you if, for the moment, your business service is your major focus. By the way, on your website, I recommend you have an extra page that is just about you. You can link to this page from your existing “About Us” page under a section “Learn more about our founder” or something similar. That way you are a separate identity to your business and the About Us page better reflects you are a growing company with a team of people to serve your clients.

When you decide you want to be an author, speaker or mentor then it is time to develop a web page that is all about you as an individual. Then you can put photos, newsreels, press kits, speaker kits etc on that new site. Only then is it really worth your effort to build up an entire site around your personal brand.

People often say to me “how do you get so much done? You must work long hours”. That’s certainly not so.
Like you, I have a life and lots of things happening. I’m a mum of 2 active teenagers, have a romantic life, play netball, go to drumming classes, run on the beach with my dog, care for my mum, socialise with friends and yes…run a fast growing business. I’m not superwoman. I have systems.

Have you ever had this experience? You put a lot of thought into the topic you want to share with your blog readers, customers and subscribers. You may even go to the effort of shooting a video on the topic, editing it, uploading it and then creating a blog post with it. You click “publish”. You send an email to your subscribers with a link to your video or blog post and ask them to leave a comment. You’re pleased with yourself because you know you have just shared something your subscribers will get great value from and you’re looking forward to getting feedback and reading the comments they write.

Then…..nothing!

No comments. No discussion. You got it wrong. You were absolutely positive this topic would be a winner. So where did you go wrong?

I (used to) know this feeling too well. Sometimes a brilliant topic falls flat then another one you think won’t be as popular turns out to create a great discussion. In this week’s video I show you a technique I have developed to test the topics of every Web TV video I create. I KNOW each video will get comments before I even create them. And the nice part? What can Harry Potter teach you about business? To learn how to apply the Petronus Charm to the Dementors in YOUR business: enjoy this quick video in this week’s episode of Wonderful Web TV. Your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

Dementors, in the Harry Potter series, are creatures that suck the soul out of you. As they close in on you, you have a feeling that there is no joy in the world and you can never expect to laugh again. In business dementors can take the form of the customer from hell, competitors behaving badly or even just technology seeming to conspire against you for the day.

We all have dementors in our businesses and they are the days you really just feel like giving up. We all have that feeling from time to time, no matter how successful you are.

How DO YOU deal with them?

You need to create a patronus charm. Yep that’s the charm they use in the series to shield you from the soul sucking of the dementors. In order for the charm to work you need to think of the happiest memory you have and focus on that while saying the charm.

So to deal with the dementors in your business, tap into the happiest memories you have to do with your business, why you are in business and all the wonderful customers you have and you have helped (or intend to help if you are just starting out). Think of the days when you just seemed to have the magic touch with technology and when someone who could be seen as a competitor acted with abundance and treated you as an alliance partner.

Think of the difference you are making to your life, the lives of your family and the lives of the people you help.

Tap into that and you can create your own patronus charm for your business and banish the impact of the dementors.
