Can you feel it? The buzz in the air? It’s 2012 and THIS IS YOUR YEAR!
Last week I shared with you an activity I have done with my family for 5 years now that is exceptional to help you finish the year on a high of confidence and enthusiasm with the energy and excitement to dive into 2012. I’ve had a lot of feedback from people who tell me it is now the start of a family tradition for them. If you didn’t see it, you can find out all about it here.

This week I take you through Step 2 where we harness that beautiful energy from the first activity and create a unique, creative intention for 2012. I take you through this activity and am being very open with you by sharing my personal and business goals for the year (a bit of show-and-tell). This video is longer than my usual videos (6 minutes instead of 3) but it’s worth it

Enjoy this quick video in this week’s episode of Wonderful Web TV, your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

<itunes:summary>Can you feel it? The buzz in the air? It's 2012 and THIS IS YOUR YEAR!
Last week I shared with you an activity I have done with my family for 5 years now that is exceptional to help you finish the year on a high of confidence and enthusiasm with the energy and excitement to dive into 2012. I've had a lot of feedback from people who tell me it is now the start of a family tradition for them. If you didn't see it, you can find out all about it here.

This week I take you through Step 2 where we harness that beautiful energy from the first activity and create a unique, creative intention for 2012. I take you through this activity and am being very open with you by sharing my personal and business goals for the year (a bit of show-and-tell). This video is longer than my usual videos (6 minutes instead of 3) but it's worth it :)

Enjoy this quick video in this week's episode of Wonderful Web TV, your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

I'd love to hear your comments and any tips you'd like to share. Share your thoughts below. I'll come back and join in the conversation.

Cheers

This month I am focusing on The Power of The Mastermind. This is the training module Gold Members of Wonderful Web Women have access to this month and it is exciting to see some of our members already creating mastermind groups together. I thought I’d share a couple of things with you today.

1. The video above was recorded at The 4th Dimension Mastery event held last year. I love this video because it shares from the heart the experience of a group of our community members who joined a mastermind group together. They share the successes and also the challenges of being a part of a mastermind. A lovely dose of reality

I hope this inspires you to create a support group yourself.

2. This month I also launched a private Facebook group only for people who are current and past customers of ours. The idea is to bring together people in our community who are serious enough abut the success of their business to invest in training with us. It’s only been going a couple of weeks and I’m excited by the support happening in the group. People are helping each other with product ideas, joint ventures, accountability, emotional support and have already arranged to meet in person. When you purchase any of our products now you will be sent an invitation to join this invitation only group. Below are just a few snippets from the private group so you can see what is happening. (they are down below)

I’d love you to join us this month and learn how to create a mastermind group that will support you to be your best in business. I’ll also help you, via our new Facebook Group to join a group. You can access this training for just another week by joining as a gold member today. (when you join, you get lifetime access to all training modules released while you are a member, as well as the step-by-step Wonderful Web Success Blueprint). Join us here.

Cheers

Janet

P.S. When you join this month you’ll get this month’s module and then in a couple of weeks you’ll get our December module with out guest expert on Facebook pages.

<itunes:summary>This month I am focusing on The Power of The Mastermind. This is the training module Gold Members of Wonderful Web Women have access to this month and it is exciting to see some of our members already creating mastermind groups together. I thought I'd share a couple of things with you today.
1. The video above was recorded at The 4th Dimension Mastery event held last year. I love this video because it shares from the heart the experience of a group of our community members who joined a mastermind group together. They share the successes and also the challenges of being a part of a mastermind. A lovely dose of reality :)
I hope this inspires you to create a support group yourself.
2. This month I also launched a private Facebook group only for people who are current and past customers of ours. The idea is to bring together people in our community who are serious enough abut the success of their business to invest in training with us. It's only been going a couple of weeks and I'm excited by the support happening in the group. People are helping each other with product ideas, joint ventures, accountability, emotional support and have already arranged to meet in person. When you purchase any of our products now you will be sent an invitation to join this invitation only group. Below are just a few snippets from the private group so you can see what is happening. (they are down below)
I'd love you to join us this month and learn how to create a mastermind group that will support you to be your best in business. I'll also help you, via our new Facebook Group to join a group. You can access this training for just another week by joining as a gold member today. (when you join, you get lifetime access to all training modules released while you are a member, as well as the step-by-step Wonderful Web Success Blueprint). Join us here.
Cheers
Janet
P.S. When you join this month you'll get this month's module and then in a couple of weeks you'll get our December module with out guest expert on Facebook pages.

Can you relate to this? You want to get fit (and not be embarrassed in a bikini or even a neck-to-knee poncho) and decide you will start running of a morning. You buy the new running gear, set the alarm for sunrise and steel yourself for the discipline you will need to start your new fitness regime.

Morning comes, the alarm goes off and you roll back over and go to sleep. Tomorrow you’ll start.

If you had to meet a friend or a personal trainer to run together you would have forced yourself out of bed. You don’t want to let them down and besides, they’ll remind you how slack you are!

The same thing happens in business.

Imagine if you had someone in business who would force / inspire you to do what you know you should do. Someone to hold you accountable.

In this short video I share with you how to find that person and importantly, how to work with them to build your business.

I think you’ll like it. Enjoy this quick video in this week’s episode of Wonderful Web TV. Your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

<itunes:summary>Can you relate to this? You want to get fit (and not be embarrassed in a bikini or even a neck-to-knee poncho) and decide you will start running of a morning. You buy the new running gear, set the alarm for sunrise and steel yourself for the discipline you will need to start your new fitness regime.

Morning comes, the alarm goes off and you roll back over and go to sleep. Tomorrow you'll start.

If you had to meet a friend or a personal trainer to run together you would have forced yourself out of bed. You don't want to let them down and besides, they'll remind you how slack you are!

The same thing happens in business.

Imagine if you had someone in business who would force / inspire you to do what you know you should do. Someone to hold you accountable.

In this short video I share with you how to find that person and importantly, how to work with them to build your business.

I think you'll like it. Enjoy this quick video in this week's episode of Wonderful Web TV. Your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

I'd love to hear your comments and any tips you'd like to share. Share your thoughts below. I'll come back and join in the conversation.
Cheers

But then… can you relate to this? We start thinking “this is a little milestone, I’ll really celebrate when I’ve achieved XYZ” and we never really acknowledge how wonderful each step is.

It’s hard to believe that was Douglas and I 25 years ago!

Last week we celebrated 25 years together in our own unique way. When we weren’t kayaking in the ocean and creeks of Patonga on The Central Coast we were found sitting in our spa bath, drinking champagne and eating gourmet food.

I can honestly say I’m more in love now than I was all those years ago and people ask me often what is our secret?

I’m sure there are many reasons we are so happy but I think the number one reason is we are both serious about fun!

Having fun is one of my personal values I also bring to business and is the number one thing I evaluate all opportunities against.

Which is why I can also say I am more in love with my business now than I was 3 and a half years ago.

So my question for you today is…what is your number one value in your relationships and in your business? Take a good hard look and ask yourself, “am I really living this value”? If you feel like you’ve lost the romance with your business, focusing on this value may be just the thing it needs.

Cheers

Janet

I am the principal broker and, because of our very personal service, my customers often see my personal brand as closely linked with my business brand. In your opinion, is it best to embrace the personal branding link and brand our business under my name? Or is it best to separate them and have 2 websites, one for the business and one about me?

I understand that by having a business name different to my own name could be important when selling the business. But it’s a lot of work to run two websites and keep up with seo / marketing etc etc…in many cases people forget a business name but remember a personal name.

Warmest regards

Vanessa Wenham

www.soulfinance.com.au

Janet’s Answer

Thanks for such a great question Vanessa. I know this is a dilemma a lot of business people face, especially if they are solo-preneurs or lead a small team. Before I answer, let me ask YOU a question first.

What is your long-term vision for your business and more importantly, for yourself?

1. Do you want your career to be personality driven and your products and services to be grown around your personal brand? This means you are really passionate about your field of expertise and are unlikely to move into another niche. You don’t really care if, when you decide to move into something else, your business loses it’s brand. This is really attractive if you have a strong personal story you build your books, courses and services around. It is particulary attractive for professional speakers.

2. Or do you want the flexibility to expand into different areas of expertise and be able to sell the business you have created or build a team to deliver the products and services while you move into new fields?

It doesn’t need to be either/or

Often, even if you build a business brand separate to your own identity, your personal identity can still be closely aligned, even if you didn’t mean it to be. This is because people like to do business with people they like and know so you need to have a person, or at least a culture in your business, people can relate to.

This is something I resisted for quite a while. I built Wonderful Web Women so it would be a separate identity to me and the focus was really meant to be on the experts I interviewed, not me. However, I found that every time I injected a more personal touch in my communication, the engagement of my customers really increased. Engagement leads to cash by the way! Eventually I accepted that it was OK to be a very visible and identifiable personality in my business and not distract from the overall company brand.

My company and brand will continue to grow and eventually there will be an expanded network of Wonderful Web Mentors. The brand will still have my style, values and leadership but it will still have a separate identity. Just like Virgin is linked to Sir Richard Branson but we all know Virgin is bigger than just him. (I had to mention him, he is one of my big influencers).

So the same can happen with your company. It can still have it’s own brand and continue to grow and serve more people than you could do on your own. It will still have your influence, values and personality injected in your marketing. But you can have your own separate identity without confusing your customers.

Short answer?

I recommend you have 2 web sites or at least own 2 domains.

To start with, just have your personal domain name and redirect it so it goes to a page on your business site which has your biography on it. Just make sure you own your name url. You don’t need a whole site about you if, for the moment, your business service is your major focus. By the way, on your website, I recommend you have an extra page that is just about you. You can link to this page from your existing “About Us” page under a section “Learn more about our founder” or something similar. That way you are a separate identity to your business and the About Us page better reflects you are a growing company with a team of people to serve your clients.

When you decide you want to be an author, speaker or mentor then it is time to develop a web page that is all about you as an individual. Then you can put photos, newsreels, press kits, speaker kits etc on that new site. Only then is it really worth your effort to build up an entire site around your personal brand.

I’d love to hear what you decide to do. I’d also love to hear from you dear readers. Is this a question you also have in your growing business? Maybe you have chosen to go one way or the other and have tips and lessons to share with others. I’d love to hear.

Please leave your comments below and I’ll come back here and join the conversation.

Cheers

What can Harry Potter teach you about business? To learn how to apply the Petronus Charm to the Dementors in YOUR business: enjoy this quick video in this week’s episode of Wonderful Web TV. Your Monday dose of Motivation, Mindset and Marketing.

Dementors, in the Harry Potter series, are creatures that suck the soul out of you. As they close in on you, you have a feeling that there is no joy in the world and you can never expect to laugh again. In business dementors can take the form of the customer from hell, competitors behaving badly or even just technology seeming to conspire against you for the day.

We all have dementors in our businesses and they are the days you really just feel like giving up. We all have that feeling from time to time, no matter how successful you are.

How DO YOU deal with them?

You need to create a patronus charm. Yep that’s the charm they use in the series to shield you from the soul sucking of the dementors. In order for the charm to work you need to think of the happiest memory you have and focus on that while saying the charm.

So to deal with the dementors in your business, tap into the happiest memories you have to do with your business, why you are in business and all the wonderful customers you have and you have helped (or intend to help if you are just starting out). Think of the days when you just seemed to have the magic touch with technology and when someone who could be seen as a competitor acted with abundance and treated you as an alliance partner.

Think of the difference you are making to your life, the lives of your family and the lives of the people you help.

Tap into that and you can create your own patronus charm for your business and banish the impact of the dementors.

I’d love to hear your comments and any tips you’d like to share. Share your thoughts below. I’ll come back and join in the conversation.

Renovate or Detonate.

This is a really popular headline used in the real estate pages where I live. It’s used to describe old and unattractive houses on great blocks of land.
The thing is, the same idea works for businesses as well.
How often do you look at your business to assess if it is still the “best house on the block”?

Maybe it is getting outdated, or your family has outgrown it or discover if it was built on dodgy foundations to start with?
I make a point to stop and take a long, hard, detached look at my business at least yearly, sometimes more.
You see, as my skills and experience grow, so does my capacity to serve more. As my customers’ needs change, I need to adapt too.

Too often businesses seem to fall into the following traps:
1. They decide their business is an old, falling down mess and detonate. That’s why the majority of businesses fail in the first 5 years.
2. They realise the business “neighbourhood” is changing but they really like their outdated decor and stick with it anyway
3. They decide to invest the time and effort (and sometimes money) and do a makeover to keep up with the times

Well, I’ve been renovating! I’ve just finished putting the makeover plans together and getting stuck into the exciting part of rolling out the plans. Yep, I’ve finished with the drawing board and out with the hammer and nails!

In the video below, I share with you why a regular review is important, the first steps you can take to review your business and some fundamental changes I am noticing online that effect the way you communicate with your customers.

I’d love to hear your comments below. Tell me what you think and ask any questions you like so i can help you make your business shine online too.

Sorry the video is a bit dark. It looked great on my computer but a bit dodgy once I uploaded it. Forgive me?

I’ll be taking you behind the scenes to see how a documentary studio works and, as a great bonus for you, along the way I’ll be interviewing the amazing people I meet who are leaders in their field and asking them to share their knowledge with you.

Last night the gorgeous and talented Kim Castle opened her home to me (and her great partner Vito Montone) and we spent hours talking and eating. Kim and Vito are specialists at branding and are behind the transformation of many big brands you may be familiar with.

In this 7 minute interview I ask Kim to share tips with you on how to create a brand that is sustainable, no matter what the economy is doing. I’d love to hear your comments so please take the time to enter them below.

You’re going to love Kim

This very simple tip that will increase your profitability and keep your business growing fast.
It has to do with your to-do list but this is far more than a time management tip. This is a tip that converts time management into profit management.

Watch this quick video where I share the tip my friend has used to create 3 multi-million dollar business. Then make sure you leave a comment below for everyone.

We all know the importance of having a to-do list to work from and the added step of prioritising that list to make sure the important things get done (handy hint: write your list the evening before so you can hit the ground running in the morning).

But how do you decide which activity is top priority?

There are a few ways to determine which things get done first. Look at the list below and see if you can identify how you usually prioritise your activities:

Eat that frog. So you do the thing you are always putting off first. I bit like eating your veggies first when you are a kid.

Fun things first. A bit like eating the bowl of ice-cream first! This sets you up for a great feeling for the day.

Easy things? Some people knock over a few quick and easy things so they have a sense of achievement before they tackle the hard stuff.

Urgent (for other people). Let’s face it. Heaps of us will reply to emails, and rush to meet other people’s deadlines as a priority.

The top 2 things that should be on your list

If you are running a business your responsibility is to keep the money flowing . Otherwise you have a hobby. My challenge to you is to make sure the top 2 things you do every single day are….wait for it…..
Income Producing Activities
This is a tip my friend Sharon Tieman (a.k.a. Madame Marketing) has used to quickly turn 3 run down businesses into multi-million dollar performers. It works!

Examples of Income Producing Activities

Making that sales phone call you’ve been putting off

Completing a sales letter and making it go live

Sending that email with a link to a sales page

Setting up advertising on Facebook or Google to go to a sales page

Contacting a JV partner and organising for them to promote your product for sale.

What do you do if you don’t have any income producing activities on your list?
Write a new list!
As always, this lesson is not complete without your input. I’d love to hear your comments and questions below.

People often ask me ‘How do I join a mastermind group? How do I run a mastermind group and why have one anyway?’ so today I thought I’d address these questions. I’ll start with the “why and how” and end with the steps that you need to run an effective mastermind group.

It can get very isolating running your own business. You need to be able to make a lot of decisions and it can be difficult to determine if you are making the correct unless you can run them by people; otherwise you are too close to it and it can get all too claustrophobic and there is a chance that you can be missing out on those gems.

This is where a mastermind group comes in. It’s an absolutely essential part of business success and it’s always a good idea to be part of at least one mastermind group, with many business owners joining two or three meetings at different times for different reasons.

How do you find a mastermind group?

You can find them through the community at Wonderful Web Women, or from a social site such as Facebook. You can start by just connecting with one person to get together a group but make sure that you are all totally focused on business.

Running an effective mastermind group is something that a lot of people don’t do well and it can end up being a group of people who get together, get on really well, talk about business; but there’s no structure and you can after a while think that this is taking a lot of your time where you’re not sure what you’re really getting out of it and wondering if it is indeed helping your business at all.

The structure of a successful mastermind group

Let me share with you a structure that I know works exceptionally well whether it’s for a sixty minute mastermind on the phone, a two hour meeting for breakfast or lunch, a weekend or five day retreat; it’s exactly the same structure at work.

Firstly, set a little bit of a time where you actually get to socialise and catch up on what you’ve being doing because quite often you are with people whose company you really love. Then agree that it’s now down to business!

Determine how many people are in the group and divide the remaining time equally up between them and then go logically through each person so that each can address any issues or problems that they have and then open the discussion up to the group for feedback. Work around the group leaving time at the end for any unfinished business and to organise your next meeting.

It’s a really simple process but if you follow that structure, you end up with a very effective group that makes sure to hold each member accountable. State one thing that you are going to do before the next meeting and make sure that it gets done. That’s where a mastermind group gets powerful. So I’d love to know – are you part of a mastermind group? Does it work for you? I’d love you to leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts and ideas.

I have a confession to make. I am a recovering perfectionist. It has been 3 years, 7 months, 2 weeks and 3 days since I last did anything 100% perfect……

What is the significance of the timing? Well that’s when I started becoming successful.

To hear my full confession and the 2 big (but very simple) things I did to break my addictive perfectionist habit, take 4 minutes to watch this video below. I’d love to hear your comments. They don’t have to be perfect

Janet’s 12 Step Program For Recovering Perfectionists

This program is based, very loosely, on the 12 step program from Alcoholics Anonymous. In true recovered perfectionist style I wrote the headline and made the video before I had worked out what the 12 steps are. It just sounded like a good idea.

So here goes…..

Step 1: Acknowledge that perfectionism is a disease you suffer and your life has a permanent handbrake on because of it

Step 2: Acknowledge that most people are too wrapped up in their own lives to really notice too many details about yours.

Step 3: Accept that what you may consider a half-done job and no-where near as good as you can do, with heaps of steps missing, and glaring unprofessional gaps, and embarrassing mistakes, and leaving yourself wide open to criticism and such a bad hair day and……….. other people think is actually pretty good.

Step 4: Make a commitment to yourself that this is your year for taking imperfect action

Step 5: Tell 3 people that this is your year for taking imperfect action

Step 6: Write the phrase “Count to 3 and jump on 2″ in thick texta and stick it near your work-space (close to where you can see it all the time, like on your computer)

Step 7: Go to your nearest pool. Stand on the high board. It has to make you a bit nervous, so whether it is high or the water is really cold or some sort of similar situation. The idea is find a situation where you have to jump off an edge, you will be perfectly safe when you land, but the act of jumping is scarey.

Step 8: Stand on the end, count slowly to 3 and, without thinking too much, jump on 2.

Step 9: Repeat step 8 over and over again until you can jump on 2 without really only counting to 2 in your head.

Step 10: Teach another person how to jump on 2. This will help you own this solution and the act of teaching others is one of the most powerful ways for you to see, from the outside, that others have the same struggles as you and if you can help them, well you can help yourself.

Step 11: Set a tight deadline to do something you have been procrastinating over and announce the deadline publicly (you can do that here if you like). You need to tell someone and ask them to keep you accountable.

Step 12: Meet that deadline no matter what. Accept no excuses from yourself and accept that to meet that deadline you will probably have to do only a fraction (probably 80%) of what you would like to do. But do it anyway.

Step 13: (OK so this is a baker’s dozen) Congratulate yourself on actually doing something you have put off for ages. You can watch this short video if you like on the very clever way I use to celebrate that is a lot of fun.

Now don’t be tempted to then stuff around for ages making your 80% project 100% perfect. You can tweak it a little but never. ever try top make it perfect. While you’re doing that your next project is lying dormant, nagging you at the back of your mind and wearing down your confidence.

Rinse and Repeat.

I’d love to hear your comments below. They don’t have to be perfect.

Cheers

Janet

Before you hit the ground running with your exciting business plans for the year do the following activity.

Get your beautiful, blank diary for 2011 and block in your holidays NOW.

Then block in personal development, business development time THEN schedule your business projects.

You’re building a lifestyle business NOT a 24/7 job.

I share with you how I do this and something special I’ll be doing on Fridays this year. You may want to do the same.

I’d love to hear your comments below. Go on….tell me what you think

P.S. I should be camping on the beach while you watch this video so I’ll log on in a few days and join the conversation here. All part of Operation Automate Janet I’ll be teaching you on a special call in a couple of weeks.

I love the beginning of a new year and what could be better than a year that starts with 1/1/11? 2011 is set to be a powerful year for me and I am absolutely determined to create as many opportunities as I can this year to help you take action and create a passionate and profitable business for yourself.

Over the last 4 years I’ve developed some very real and practical strategies to keep myself focused and very productive. Over the first few weeks of the year I’m sharing some of these with you.

This video below shares the second step I take at the beginning of every year and it is simple but very powerful. It is absolutely essential you only do this AFTER doing step 1. You can get the details on the first step over here.

I’d love to hear your thoughts below. Tell me what YOU do to stay focused all year. I’d love to hear your big goals for 2011. Leave you comments below and I’ll make sure I check in here this week and join the conversation.

P.S. This video and post is part of my “Project Automate Janet”. Watch your emails over the next week because I’ll be running a very special tele-class to share with you how you can set up your own “Automate you” while you are on holidays.

You’ll see in the video that learning the djembe drums was on my goals sheet for 2010. This week my little family and I are rehearsing to be part of a drumming ensemble, with 180 other community drummers, to open The Festival of Sydney. How exciting! We’ll be playing the drums in front of a quarter of a million people. Yep, this simple process works big time!

If you want to check out our drumming style, you can see us in action in our Christmas video (we’ve only been learning a few months but we have a lot of fun).

Hi

Wow I can’t believe it is only a few days until 2011. Before you set yourself too many goals for 2011, and get caught in the frenzy of New Year’s Resolutions, I want to share something important with you.

There is a very important step I recommend you take BEFORE you set your goals. There is an activity I have done for the last 4 years at this time of the year. It is incredibly powerful. Take the time to watch this video I have made for you that shows you in detail the exact strategy I have used to help me achieve so much in the past few years. I’d love to know what you think. Leave a comment below and share your thoughts with me. I’ll check in here this week and join the conversation.

Would you like to see an article I have done in the past that shows you step by step how this simple process works?

You can check it out here.

P.S. This video is part of Project Automate Janet. You know you can spend just a few hours and have videos, blog posts, emails, twitter posts and facebook posts all set up automatically to keep in contact with your readers while you are holidays? I had fun making these videos to share with you and I’m sure I’m enjoying my holidays as well.

To discover how to change the sense of stress and overwhelm at Christmas and how you can apply the same strategy to overwhelm in your business, read the article and watch the video below, making sure to leave a comment!

What emotions do you choose today in your business?

It’s that time of the year again! Christmas is getting close and there’s so much to think about and organise. Christmas can be a very stressful time – presents to organise, parties to attend, end of school stuff to deal with, food to buy, not to mention all the money leaving your bank account! In theory, the festive season should be a fun time but for many of us, it means additional stress in our already hectic lives.

You have a choice

A couple of years ago after a particularly taxing Christmas, I realised that I have a choice about how I’m going to approach things. Am I going to be stressed or do I choose to treat Christmas like fun?

There’s nothing stopping me approaching Christmas exactly the same way my kids do. So now I can’t wait for December 25th! It’s going to be fun! I can’t wait to open my presents and I’m excited about watching others open their gifts. I don’t really care about what we’re going to eat, as long as we have fresh food and great company. As long as I’m with the people I love, it doesn’t matter if the house is not spotless.

Exactly the same thing can be applied to your business. Either you can get stressed about all the things you should be doing in your business – endless to-do lists, stuff to learn, bills to pay, how much money you’re bringing in. It’s all too easy to forget to have fun.

Here’s my challenge to you

So that’s my challenge to you: what emotions are you going to feel when it comes to your business?

Do you choose to have fun? Is this going to be an adventure that will enrich yours and other people’s lives? You have the choice: you can choose to be stressed and take everything seriously, or you can choose to look at your business as a fun, enjoyable journey.

Step back from your feelings of overwhelm and make the conscious decision to inject fun and laughter into your everyday business life.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Let me know if you do this already or if you decide to give it a try. You can join the conversation by leaving a comment below. I’ll come back and read every comment and join in the conversation.

Who do you pay first in your business? Your contractors? Your affiliates? Your phone bill? Yourself?

When first starting out in business, you have many things to consider. Various outgoings are a necessary part of doing business. You’ll have overheads including utility bills, ongoing education, marketing and technology costs, not to mention paying your team members. And if you have affiliates, sales people or joint venture partners you definitely have to pay them as they are the ones bringing in new business.

Who do you pay first in your business?

Many new business owners tend to pay themselves last, which means they end up with the leftover “scraps”. This is not a very good incentive to stay in business!

I must admit that I was guilty of doing this myself at the beginning. It required a huge mental shift to change this way of thinking and it was a big psychological hurdle for me to overcome.

Pay Yourself First

I decided to start paying myself first, even when the business was not making a profit. It was an important symbolic gesture for me. Rather than become overwhelmed and try to pay myself a large salary, I started out by paying myself a ridiculously small amount of money. It was a symbolic amount, definitely not enough to live on, but even so, I made sure that it was always taken out of my business account and transferred over to my personal account every fortnight, just like a payday. It was non-negotiable which removed the temptation to spend it on anything else.

This had various knock-on effects for my business and mindset. Firstly I enjoyed a sense of comfort in knowing that I was being paid. I was never resentful about paying for overheads or paying my contractors. I made sure I paid them (and myself!) on time and every time. After all, they are essential components of your business, and outsourcing ensures that your business grows.

Unexpected Consequences

Secondly, it caused me to focus with laser-like intention on how I was going to bring that money in. I had commitments to pay the people who help grow my business and I knew I had to pay them on time otherwise I would not be building a business on integrity. So I had to find a way to pay them every time, without dipping into my own pay.

I continued increasing my “pay” every month, just by small amounts. It was a huge paradigm shift: there is no better feeling than knowing that you have the capacity to double your income every couple of months! You’ve earned it, so you can enjoy it. And once you’ve gone forward you can never go back.

Don’t Believe the 2 Year Myth

So, ask yourself, who do you pay first in your business? Do you pay yourself first or are you surviving on leftover scraps? Don’t fall into the trap of telling yourself that no-one makes money in business for the first couple of years, so it’s OK if you don’t pay yourself anything. That simply is not true.

I know it’s a huge psychological change so I suggest just starting with something like $20, $30, $50, $100 or even $500 a fortnight! This will definitely help you overcome this particular hurdle, and take your business to another level
entirely.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Let me know if you do this already or if you decide to give it a try. You can join the conversation by leaving a comment below. I’ll come back and read every comment and join in the conversation.

Sometimes, people who pride themselves on over-delivering (I’m putting my hand up here) can fall into the trap of going too far and instead over-whelm their customers.

In this short video I share with you why this happens and what to do about it if you find you are guilty of this.

I’d love to know what you think. Are you guilty of overwhelming through good intention or perhaps you are have been on the other side and been overwhelmed by a well meaning person? Do you have any advice or tips to share with others here?

Leave your comments below or, if you prefer, comment over on YouTube.

Cheers
