“So What Do You Do?”
Filed under: Business Skills, Featured Speakers, Internet Basics, Offline strategies for online business
This week I was fortunate to interview Sharla Jacobs about how she has helped thousands of “heart-based” business owners build their practices into six figure businesses.
(You can find out more about Sharla here and also listen to the interview in the gold members’ area of Wonderful Web Women.)
Sharla shared some great ideas on how to answer the question “What do you do?”
It is quite common for people to answer this question with details on HOW you deliver services. Eg “I interview the most successful women on the internet on live webcasts to learn how to grow a successful business” or “I run workshops and work with clients one-on-one to help them reach their goals”.
The problem with this type of response is it doesn’t answer the question that is really in their mind which is “What in it for me?”
Sharla suggested you rephrase the question in your mind to be “How do you help people?”, rather than “What do you do?”
Because really, you are in business to help people after all.
A useful Template to Use
Sharla shared a template you can use which helps to get your “elevator pitch” clear in a way that really answers the question “how you help”. Read more

How to use the # tag on twitter (and chat to others while you listen to our tele-seminars)
Filed under: Facebook, Featured Speakers, Social Network Sites
Here is a really handy tip for using Twitter which was shared with us by Nancy Marmolejo on an awesome interview today. I love it so much, I suggest we use it during every interview we do with Wonderful Web Women.
So let me tell you what it is, why it is great and how to make the most of it…..
What is a hash tag?
If you aren’t a member of www.twitter.com yet then get over there and sign up. It’s free and it is shaping the future of marketing on the Internet. Be warned. It’s addictive.
Basically you share 140 character “tweets” with others on what you are doing, thoughts you have, questions, business tips, links to blog posts etc.
You may notice at the end of some posts people add something like # followed by a word or letters. This is called a hash tag. For example, the new tag we use for Wonderful Web Women is #wwwomen
So why is a hash tag great?
Twitter can get very busy and it is hard to find the actual conversation threads you are looking for. Once you know a hash tag you can search for all tweets that use that hash tag so you can continue a conversation with people with the same interests (or on the same tele-seminar). It’s like tuning into the right radio station when all you heard before was white noise.
Below here, I show you step by step how to sign up for twitter, search on a hash tag and join a conversation. It’s really pretty easy.
How to make the most of it
Every time we have a life tele-seminar with Wonderful Web Women from now on, we will have a parallel conversation happening on twitter. That way I can concentrate on doing a great interview and answering the questions you send you through to me on the web cast page. You can be taking notes but also sharing ideas, asking questions and sharing tips with other people who are on the call listening. How cool is that?
That way you can all help each other make the most of what you are learning. There is also a great chance you will find your next client or joint venture partner on twitter during these conversations.
Convinced? Give it a go and see what you think.
There are 4 web addresses that will help you:
1. www.twitter.com
2. www.tweetchat.com
3. Nancy’s free report:
“Why Social Networking: 4 Remarkable Strategies to Grow Your Business, Expand Your Referral Network, and Increase Your Visibility”
4. Nancy’s excellent product to automate heaps of the stuff you do on twitter and facebook so you look busy when you aren’t
Now, step by step photos on how to do this. It is really very easy.
Step 1: Join Twitter
Step 2: Log in and see all the chatter happening
Step 3. Click on the search link at the bottom of the twitter page
Step 4: search on #wwwomen
Step 5: See where all the really cool people from Wonderful Web Women hang out. Remember, make sure you add #wwwomen to any conversations you have about Wonderful Web Women, especially when you are on one of our tele-seminars, so your conversations will show up here too.
Another option:
Instead of Using Search, you can try Tweet chat
Step 1: Log into www.tweetchat.com
Step 2: search for #wwwomen
Step 3: Hang out where the really cool people are
(make sure you add #wwwomen to your comments so you show up here as well)
Get Your Head Straight
Filed under: Featured Speakers, Personal Development
Ok. “Get Your Head Straight” may seem like a weird phrase to use but it’s the simplest way I can explain how to create success in your life. Every successful person I have been fortunate enough to interview has spent time at some stage really looking within and straightening out their thoughts. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it doesn’t matter how many marketing courses, technical courses and business courses you invest in, these skills will not get you where you deserve to be if your mind is holding you back.
One of the most common things we do is to sabotage our own success. Often we don’t realise we are doing it and we very cleverly rationalise why we haven’t taken that risk, actioned that opportunity or stepped outside our comfort zone.
Do these phrases sound familiar to you? Read more
Know your why
Filed under: Business Skills, Featured Speakers, Law of Attraction, Personal Development
When I interviewed Tracy Monteforte this week she shared an important concept that many people forget.
You must know your “why”.
Growing a business, no matter how successful it is, means you will have times when you hit real challenges that make you consider if you really want to continue. It is at these times that it is essential you know WHY you are in business.
Making money is not enough. This motivation will NOT get you through the hard times. You also have to think about the real reason you are in business.
Tracy showed incredible tenacity when she was setting up the on-line system that now provides solutions to thousands of people world-wide. What started as a 3 month & $10,000 project stretched over close to a year and $70,000. Wouldn’t you be tempted to give up? I’m sure Tracy was. What kept her going was the reason she was in business. She wanted to be home with her children and not have to work outside the home. She also wanted to help other parents have the same opportunity.
So what is your WHY?
I know my why. In fact I remind myself every morning because I have written my WHY in my “gratitude book” which sits beside my bed. When I read it each morning I feel energised and focused and know I will NEVER give up. I encourage you to do the same. Your WHY is what will enable you to create success.
