It’s been on my mind a lot this week and so I have created a video for you on a big Ah Ha I had, which is all about the practical application of the emotion of love to your business. You can see the video below.

My ah ha is not about “love your customer and your business will grow” because, even though that is true, this is a bit deeper. Which is why I feel like I’m going out on a limb a bit here. This is about the practical application of the emotion of love to your business.

If you’re wondering why I’m focused on love at the moment it’s because I’m wondering where Doug The Wonderful Web Man is taking me for our surprise wedding anniversary weekend in a few days? It’s his turn this year (24 years).

We have very strict rules.

1. The destination and activities are a secret.
2. The person being surprised can ask 1 question per day in the week before to try and guess where we are going.
3. The organiser has to answer – but they are allowed to lie!

Because of rule 1 combined with rule 3, I have travelled to outback pubs, packed with cocktail dresses and stilettos, 5 star hotels packed with walking boots and a beach holiday packed with beanies and gloves. I have learnt to pack for all occasions!

I’ll let you know where we go. If you are my friend on Facebook I’m sharing the daily clues there to see if you can help me work it out.

Instead of hoping for inspiration I have a method I use which triggers lateral thinking any time. It is also strangely comforting. It’s a bit unorthodox but it works every time. Last night I submitted my application for the Telstra Business Women’s Awards with 9 minutes to spare. OK so I was nominated by the gorgeous Lenore Miller weeks ago but “diamonds are made under pressure” you know! As the dust settled from my screeching dash over the finish line I thought about why I left it to the last minute and the lessons I can share with you from this.

Entering Awards Challenges Your Self  Belief

What goes through your mind at the thought of entering an award? Especially a business award?

In theory you see it as an opportunity and you consciously visualise yourself walking up the stage on presentation night and accepting your winner’s trophy. There is an aura of success around you………….

Reality Check

Self doubt raises it’s ugly head. There are so many amazing people out there, how could you possibly win? You really should wait until next year or the year after or in 5 years time when you are sure you will be so much more competitive.

Admit it. Why bother?

Another Reality Check

The reality is, you will always be aiming for something more. It’s the nature of entrepreneurs to always see what is possible. I was nominated a few years ago for this same award and thought “I’ll wait until my business reaches 6 figures”. The following year I was nominated again and thought “I’ll wait until my business is mid six figures”. This year I thought “I’ll wait until my business reaches 7 figures”.

When is enough good enough? Do you postpone opportunities until you get things perfect?

The Ultimate Reality Check

Opportunities will not wait for you to take action. They’ll be taken by the person who believes in themselves enough to act.

That’s why I submitted my application with 9 minutes to spare.

That’s also why I entered the MCEI Women in Business awards last year, and sent in my application at the very, very last minute. I knew there were some amazing people entering but also knew that if I didn’t demonstrate belief in myself, then how can I expect others to believe in me too?

I won the MCEI award and then to my absolute shock, went on to win the overall prize of Australian Marketer of The Year!

My Challenge To You

I want you to be brutally honest with yourself. What opportunities are you ignoring because you have not achieved what you think  you MUST achieve before you can hold your head high?

Now write a list of all the achievements you have made, no matter how small they seem. Keep that list close by so you can refer back to it in times of self-doubt. To get you thinking, here’s an exercise my family and I do at the end of each year and hang in our living room to remind us.

Celebrate those achievements. You can see a clever way to make sure you celebrate in this short video I shared a while ago.

The Relationship between Fence Sitting and Personal Branding

I want you think about the people in your industry who stand out as the leaders. There is something about them that draws people to them and often they have a polarising effect in the market. Some people LOVE them and other people can’t stand them. You may even find yourself saying sometimes “What would so-and-so say about this” or “What would they do in this situation”.

You may also find yourself thinking “geez, I can just imagine what so-and-so would say about that if they heard it”.

How do you know what they think and why do they resonate with you?

People who stand out as leaders in their field take a stand. They don’t sit on the fence and try to please everyone. They decide what they stand for and what they stand against. Now I’m not saying that leaders need to be inflexible. I’m saying they know what things matter.

This “taking a stand” is an important part of your personal brand but this is where it gets important (and powerful). To attract customers like a magnet in an online niche / community / tribe (which name you choose depends on the differing degrees of identity between the people in that group) it is essential that the stand you take resonates with the people you want to attract.

You can only be sure there is congruency between your values and those of your target market if you take the time to get to know them. Find out what makes them tick.

Here’s an example from my own experience

In online marketing people tend to fall into 2 camps.

There are some who teach that it doesn’t matter what topic or niche you build your business around as long as you make money. Your personal passions are not important. All you really need is to follow the steps.

There are others who say it is essential that you build your business around your passions because you won’t last the hard times. When the going gets tough it is your passion that gets you through and in addition, your target market can tell if you are passionate or not and this will impact on how successful your business is.

I can certainly understand both points of view and I have friends who have built businesses on both models. But me…I see business development as the most effective form of personal development so I only want to help people build a business around their passions (unless their true passion is business systems and that’s where they get their buzz).

So it should come as no surprise that I attract customers who want to build their business around their passions. This is part of my personal brand.

I share a story in a video of what happened when (ONCE) I promoted a product that was out of alignment with what I stand for and what my “tribe” believes. Woah did they burn me for acting in-congruently! This was an important lesson on how loyal people DO feel if you act in alignment with their values because they wouldn’t be complaining of betrayal if they didn’t feel loyal in the first place!

How Can You Apply This Idea To Your Personal Brand?

If you want to attract customers that YOU want to work with, they need to be able to identify that you are the person THEY want. There are just too many dull and boring people in the market place who sit on the fence and so blend in with the rest of the crowd. They sit there so long they get splinters in their bum and things really start to hurt (how far can I draw this analogy?)

Do some soul searching and market searching NOW and decide what things are important enough for you to jump off the fence and so stand out from the crowd.

This is one of the first steps to developing what I call a “Congruency Checklist”. At first I thought it was just me, feeling the buzz because Wonderful Web Women has just turned 2 this week (happy birthday to us). I also thought it was just me because our birthday coincided with the delivery of a pallet load of my first ever book – best seller no less! (expect to hear me mention this until it drives you crazy – I’m a bit excited

But I think it’s bigger than just me.

I seem to be getting phone calls, emails, tweets etc from such a wide variety of people saying that they feel as if they are on the cusp of something big. They’re not really sure what the “something big” is, but they feel as if things are just “in the flow”.

Can you feel it?

To be an intelligent leader you first need to be an intelligent follower.

This means you can learn everything you need from your mentors. This is so true.
I have found the private coaching clients I have who take massive action on what I tell them to do, and have faith – are the ones who quickly become leaders themselves.
So my question to you? Are you intelligently choosing the best mentors? When you have found the right person or people to learn from, are you intelligently learning and applying what they teach?
Or are you choosing mentors and then  ignore their guidance, trying to reinvent the wheel anyway?
Do you do this? If so, do you find yourself months down the track no further ahead than you were before, complaining that the mentors you chose to learn from have let you down?

This is not intelligent following and does not  lead to intelligent leadership.

Through Wonderful Web Women, my goal is to help you find the perfect mentor for whatever stage you are at in business right now. That mentor may be me or it may be one of the incredible women I interview. Or it may be a combination. It doesn’t really matter.

What DOES matter is that when you do find the mentor (or leader) that you resonate with, that you follow them intelligently.

This is the first step to becoming an intelligent leader yourself. As Napoleon Hill states “Most great leaders began in the capacity of followers. They became great leaders because they were INTELLIGENT FOLLOWERS. With few exceptions, the (wo)man who cannot follow a leader intelligently, cannot become an efficient leader.”
Who Has Inspired You?

I’m interested to hear who you have found as a mentor and how you have applied what they have taught you. I have had numerous mentors throughout my career and have many wonderful mentors at the moment. I choose them carefully and then take action on what they teach me until I raise myself to the level as their peer.

I am always very grateful for their leadership and for showing me the path so I can then walk beside them.

Now something interesting has happened as a result. Apart from the extra room (literally) I have created, I also feel an incredible freeing of energy around my home and business. It’s almost as if I’ve unblocked an energy plug.

My tip to you….. declutter now. Really look at what STUFF is using your energy and what under performing things you have tolerated. A warning though. It is almost like my electrical appliances have felt threatened by my intolerance of under performance. Since I’ve started this I’ve had to replace 2 computers, 2 external hardrives, my blackberry and the dishwasher. AHHHHH!!

So what’s this about working at home?

2 years ago I moved my business out of my home office so I would start taking myself and my business seriously. If you’ve been following my career since then, you’ll see it worked

But now the energy in my home is so clear, I find I work from home all the time. So this week we made the decision to move back home and I can’t wait. In fact, from decision made to move completed will be 7 days!

As part of my office declutter I have found thousands of dollars of courses I have consumed, loved and now don’t need. They nearly got sold on eBay, or even burnt!

But hey, would you like them instead?

Well that’s what I’ve been doing the last few weeks. I’ve warned my family that if anything stands still for too long it is getting thrown out!

So I have had a huge garage sale, donated great stuff to charity and then BURNT everything else. I kid you not. As the huge bonfire burnt I stood there visualising the clearing of energy and the clear path that was now open to me.

How does this relate to business?

I have also done the same in my business. I’ve brought in friends, mentors and a new accountant (threw out the old one, didn’t burn them) and unearthed any clutter in the business. Now I know exactly where the flow of energy is in my business (energy flow in business is the flow of money) and I can clear out the clutter that blocks the energy.

Want to know the results?

Last week was our best week ever and I could see clearly that the following week will match it. Wow. I had to check 4 times to see if it was right as I hadn’t implemented any new strategies.

And just as exciting… I threw so much stuff out at home I cleared a whole room in our shed. Cleaned, painted and a “club house” sign put on the door and now we have a music room for the kids. This means the drum kit, djembe drums, keyboard, guitars, violins etc are all out of the house now and in a cool hangout. And the noise has gone too!

How does this relate to you?

It has taken a huge effort to declutter. Not just because of the time and the heavy lifting. Mostly because of the huge emotional baggage tied to each article of STUFF. I encourage you to look around you. Are your surroundings causing you stress? Are you cluttering up your energy with things that you put great emotional value on but no longer serve you a purpose?

Go on, steel yourself and throw them out. Make it into a ceremony and visualise the clearing of energy. Visualise the clear path that is now available to you and the flow of money and opportunities that can now fill that space.

I challenge you. Clear out just 3 things TODAY and feel the shift in your energy. It’s powerful.

(and this is your priority when you start on-line) you need to have a reason for people to give you their email address.

It doesn’t cut the grade anymore today “subscribe to my newsletter”.

I’m a long way from the fires but we are still affected.

Douglas, my husband, has been away fighting fires in NSW. Thank heavens he is not holding a hose. Instead he has been assigned to the command centre, planning where the troops on the ground go. He comes home tonight and then will be on standby to relieve the troops in Victoria who must be exhausted.

A Positive Story

There is so much heartache at the moment, I thought I would share a heart warming story from the fire front. If you click on the image you can view a video of a firefighter finding a burnt Koala in the bush. The Koala is so exhausted he drinks 3 bottles of water straight from the firefighter’s drink bottle.

You must know your “why”.

Growing a business, no matter how successful it is, means you will have times when you hit real challenges that make you consider if you really want to continue. It is at these times that it is essential you know WHY you are in business.

Making money is not enough. This motivation will NOT get you through the hard times. You also have to think about the real reason you are in business.

Tracy showed incredible tenacity when she was setting up the on-line system that now provides solutions to thousands of people world-wide. What started as a 3 month & $10,000 project stretched over close to a year and $70,000. Wouldn’t you be tempted to give up? I’m sure Tracy was. What kept her going was the reason she was in business. She wanted to be home with her children and not have to work outside the home. She also wanted to help other parents have the same opportunity.

So what is your WHY?

I know my why. In fact I remind myself every morning because I have written my WHY in my “gratitude book” which sits beside my bed. When I read it each morning I feel energised and focused and know I will NEVER give up. I encourage you to do the same. Your WHY is what will enable you to create success.

Gabriela uses  (amongst many things) a technique called EFT to help overcome fears and limiting beliefs that are holding us back from success. I’ve included a brief intro to this below but first let’s talk about common limiting beliefs and fears. Also, I recommend you check out Gabriela’s offer to help you, it is incredibly generous. What is a limiting belief?

You know that little voice that niggles in the back of your head that stops you being exceptional? The one that says things like “you aren’t good enough”, “Other people are much better at this than you”, “people will find out you’re a fraud / hypocrite / idiot”. These are the thoughts that often sit in our subconscious and prevent us attracting the success we deserve.

Yesterday, many of our members shared the negative thoughts that plague them. I’m very grateful for their courage in doing this as we quickly came to realise that many of the people on the call had the same doubts. Let me share the most common ones with you and see if you can relate to them.

1. I’m not good enough. Other people think I can do this but they don’t realise that I’m not that good and I will look like a fool when I let them down.

2. I’ll never make money on the Internet. I’m just not techy. I’m so angry and frustrated that I have to rely on others and i know I can never do this.

3. It doesn’t matter if I learn all this marketing stuff and apply it all. I don’t think I will get the same results as others. They are just different to me.

EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique is best described as emotional acupuncture without needles. It also works extremely well for physical aspects, such as physical pain. EFT helps to “re-organise” the body and mind, inducing relaxation, which enables a realignment of the body’s energy systems.

It served as a wake-up call. The smart ones looked at their lifestyle, made long-needed changes and came out fit, healthy with a new zest for life. As a community world-wide, we’ve been gorgeing on easy credit and got lazy. Now we’re suffering chest pains. I know that the people who take action, invest in their education and personal development, and implement simple strategies that are cheap and effective will stand out as lean, mean and shiny examples of good business. I’m up for the challenge. How about you?

Nearly every woman I have interviewed about their success refers in some way to “The Law of Attraction” in some way. This is no coincidence.

One of the best introductions to this is the movie and book “The Secret” I would consider this compulsory viewing and reading. Even my children have watched the movie and comment on how to use it.

One of my favourite Australian Internet marketers is Sandy Forster. She not only practices the techniques she also teaches them. So much so that she is featured in the follow up movie. You can get a copy of the movie, books and help from Sandy here.

You know we have been so lucky to learn from incredibly successful women in the last year. I’ve noticed something that is common to every one of them. They all emphasise the importance of “getting your head straight”. A big part of this is overcoming negative head talk that results in lack of confidence and self esteem. We all have these terrible voices to some degree and it’s something I’ve discovered you really need to consciously work on.
I’ve discovered a great free resource for you from an incredibly well respected man, Joe Rubino, who one of our members emailed me to recommend. She has been studying his program and has raved about the changes she has seen in her life. So I thought I should share this with you.

The 7 Chakra’s

The Chakra is a Sanskrit word for “wheel”. Ancient teachers believed that your body has seven spinning wheels of energy, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, that offer you lessons of soul advancement – should you choose to accept and uncover those lessons. Baeth has used this knowledge and concept to develop a system that helps you look at business, and your life from a new perspective. One with clarity, passion and profit. The diagram to the left shows you the different Chakras. Let me share with you some of the tips Baeth shared with us yesterday, based on each of the chakras.

After each tip, I also ask you a question for you to evaluate your own success in relations to the Chakra discussed. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these questions.

#1: Root Chakra – The power of the tribe

Our ‘family’ is larger than the family we grew up with. Our ‘family’ influences include the educational system, church, government and the media. The combination of beliefs we inherited from our childhood combined with these other ‘belief influencers’ encode our subconscious and program us not to stray too far from the crowd. Until this group think is exposed, our income reflects the degree to which you ‘play it safe’ rather than rocking the cradle. Even the most independent person is influenced and affected by group think. Your very own “family” may be the biggest challenge you face in implementing your success plan!

It’s important to create a ‘tribe’ that resonates with who you truly are and break free of those beliefs that cause you to conform rather than transform while still maintaining those relationships nearest and dearest to you.

Baeth used Wonderful Web Women as an example of the creation of a “New Tribe”. We have created a community where women are supported to create success on-line.

Question: Do the people you surround yourself with support your personal and business development? Where can you find new influences?

#2: Splenic Chakra – love, sex and creativity

Your comfort level with intimate relationships – with yourself, others and your creativity – directly affect your flow of income. This is the discussion you probably WON’T have in most classes on money… which is why they may be putting you to sleep! Your ability to make money and experience true freedom in every area of your life is directly related to your ability to harness your creative power and put this creative power out in to the world. It’s that simple. Folks can be riddled with issues like apathy, confusion, procrastination, broken promises and broken relationships when the lessons of the second chakra aren’t addressed.

It is necessary to break through your sex, love, and creativity issues to address the money issue. When you handle the ‘money issue,’ you begin to heal these other areas of your life.

Question: Do you feel you are free to express yourself creatively in your work and in your relationships?

# 3: Solar Plexis Chakra – self betrayal

In order to have ‘money boundaries,’ you must claim your inner power and put your self first (with compassion) so you don’t end up last.

As you transcend the limitations of group think and express more of your creativity in the world, you will encounter various tests against your own personal boundaries. How much courage, fortitude, stamina and strength do you have to honor your own identity and values? Do you know your own boundaries and stay true to your own standards?

Baeth talked about the importance of trusting your “gut instinct” in business and staying true to what you believe.

Your degree of ‘self-care’ reflects itself in your bank account. For example, do you pay yourself first or are you loyal to the demands of others at your own expense? The lessons of the third chakra teach us that we must take care of ourselves in order to take care of others. This can be difficult if you are accused of being ‘self-ish.’

It’s important to identify your values, boundaries and standards so you can avoid self-betrayal, improve paying yourself and increase your investing and savings power.

Question: Are you paying yourself first? Do you take the time to care for yourself by taking time-out, exercising and looking after your appearance?

#4: Heart Chakra – the link between making money and “following your bliss”

It is one of Baeth’s personal missions to bust the myth that says, “You must make money, THEN you can do what you love.” No, no, no! It doesn’t work that way. It’s never worked for anyone and it’s not going to work for you. When you listen to your heart, you create a heart-based relationship between your purpose and your profit. The KEY is to do what your heart craves now and get paid for your passions.

Here is Helen’s thought on the idea of living a balanced life. This really rings so true for me. Often we think of the balance in terms of time. You know, I spend an equal time here at work, and equal at home. Or I left work early and that means my life is more balanced. This assumes that your life is divided in 2.  One is work which is something you just have to do, suffer through almost. The other half is your real life.

Helen shared with us the importance of aligning your life with what is important to you and this includes your work / business. If you truly dislike what you are doing in your working hours then your life cannot be balanced. It’s not really a matter of 50% of your time is happy and the other 50% is miserable.

The outcome if your energy and purpose is aligned? Work doesn’t feel like work. You slip into “being in the flow”. You know that experience when everything just seems so much easier to do, everything works?

Helen shared great techniques for increasing the energy of you and your team (this could be your work team or even your family) and also specific ways to get you and your team working in alignment. How to Live a Juiced Up Life

Access: Make sure you are accessing everything about yourself or your team that is available. Think about if there is something you do not do because you have been told in the past that you are no good at it?

Move: Take action. It may not be the right action but you won’t know until you actually do something. As Helen says, you can’t steer a parked car. 

Choose: Make a choice. Not choosing is a choice. Eventually someone will choose for you but you have no right to complain about the outcome if you chose not to make a decision.

Stretch: We are all tempted to stay within our comfort zones but then things cannot improve if you do not move beyond them. The area between comfort and pain is the stretch zone. Set stretch goals, not pain goals and you can achieve want you want with incremental steps.

BOP (Be On Purpose): Do what you are meant to do. Keep your vision (either personal or team) in view all the time. Helen referred to the super hero we all have inside us. You know, the one you always imagined yourself to be when you were young. The one who can do anything. Keep that inner super hero in focus.

Clarity On Your Needs And Your Life Purpose

Beth discovered Hand Analysis when she had tried without success many techniques to get clarity on her passions and life purpose. The changes in her life were so dramatic she devoted herself to learning and mastering the techniques until the results were reliable and predictable. She now teaches others to do the same. Beth’s advice on clarity for yourself:

Clarity On Your Customer’s Needs

It is essential you are clear on your own purpose before you grow your business. Don’t assume you know what your customers want and are willing to pay. Here is a fool proof way to get clarity on your client’s needs. Beth does this every 3 months.

Ask.

I know, it sounds obvious but what do you ask them?

It is important to not be too limiting in your questions as you will lose the gems. Here are Beth’s suggested questions:

1. What is your greatest pain you would do anything to solve? (You can clarify this, such as what is your greatest problem with your niche, such as finances, pets etc)
2. How would your life be different if you solved this problem?

How do you ask them?

1. If you only have a few people, send an email or just ask them in person

2. If you have more than a handful, use a service such as Survey Monkey. (I’ve used this. It is great and free for less than 100 responses. I also use Ask. You can get a $1 trial here and see the step by step videos in the gold members area on how to use it)

The information you get simply by asking these specific questions is incredibly powerful and will be the basis for your business. If you solve people’s pain, you have guaranteed success.

I loved the interview with Sandy Forster today. She shared how she went from single mum on welfare and $100,000 in debt to now making millions. The big thing that Sandy attributed her success to was “retraining” her subconscious to a millionaire mindset. You’ll really have to listen to the interview as she gave some amazing techniques to use to retrain your mind.

I’d like to share with you here the technique that Sandy used when she first took real action to retrain her  mind. The thing that I found fascinating was that she was taking a lot of action in the right direction (shares, property investing etc) but was losing money. The one thing that really changed her fortune was a change in her subconscious. As soon as she completed the steps I am about to share with you, her fortune changed dramatically. So let’s give it a go!

Fake it ’till you make it – tricking your subconscious

 Sandy mentioned repeating an affirmation she created hundreds of times per day until she believed what she was saying.

Her affirmation was “I am now a debt free millionaire”. Now your rational mind at first says “yeh sure” so Sandy shared her baby steps way to fooling your mind into believing.

• She started by saying “I am now ready to accept that I am in the process of becoming a debt free millionaire”.
• After repeating this for days she changed it to ”I am in the process of becoming a debt free millionaire”.
• Repeated for days she then felt comfortable to say her final affirmation “I am now a debt free millionaire”.

 The important thing is to repeat it hundreds or thousands of times per day for weeks until you believe it. And when your fortunes slip, go back and start again as a top up. It is also very important that you FEEL what you are saying. It is your emotions in tandem with the affirmation that create the change.

Here’s my challenge to you.

If you have no web site, no list and don’t expect to get a web site for a while

Applying The Law of Attraction

If you’ve seen the movie “The Secret” or “What the Bleep” you will be familiar with the concept of The Law of Attraction. Basically it comes down to “what you focus on you attract into your life”.
