This month I am focusing on The Power of The Mastermind. This is the training module Gold Members of Wonderful Web Women have access to this month and it is exciting to see some of our members already creating mastermind groups together. I thought I’d share a couple of things with you today.

1. The video above was recorded at The 4th Dimension Mastery event held last year. I love this video because it shares from the heart the experience of a group of our community members who joined a mastermind group together. They share the successes and also the challenges of being a part of a mastermind. A lovely dose of reality

I hope this inspires you to create a support group yourself.

2. This month I also launched a private Facebook group only for people who are current and past customers of ours. The idea is to bring together people in our community who are serious enough abut the success of their business to invest in training with us. It’s only been going a couple of weeks and I’m excited by the support happening in the group. People are helping each other with product ideas, joint ventures, accountability, emotional support and have already arranged to meet in person. A few months ago I boarded a plane to groovy Byron Bay to meet up with 4 entrepreneurial girlfriends. Once per year we meet for a retreat mastermind to work on our businesses. This year we did an activity called “Board of Directors”. It is very powerful and a brilliant way to work with your mastermind group. Can you relate to this? You want to get fit (and not be embarrassed in a bikini or even a neck-to-knee poncho) and decide you will start running of a morning. You buy the new running gear, set the alarm for sunrise and steel yourself for the discipline you will need to start your new fitness regime.

Morning comes, the alarm goes off and you roll back over and go to sleep. Tomorrow you’ll start.

If you had to meet a friend or a personal trainer to run together you would have forced yourself out of bed. You don’t want to let them down and besides, they’ll remind you how slack you are!

The same thing happens in business.

Imagine if you had someone in business who would force / inspire you to do what you know you should do.  Someone to hold you accountable.

People often ask me ‘How do I join a mastermind group? How do I run a mastermind group and why have one anyway?’ so today I thought I’d address these questions. I’ll start with the “why and how” and end with the steps that you need to run an effective mastermind group.

It can get very isolating running your own business. You need to be able to make a lot of decisions and it can be difficult to determine if you are making the correct unless you can run them by people; otherwise you are too close to it and it can get all too claustrophobic and there is a chance that you can be missing out on those gems.

This is where a mastermind group comes in. It’s an absolutely essential part of business success and it’s always a good idea to be part of at least one mastermind group, with many business owners joining two or three meetings at different times for different reasons.

How do you find a mastermind group?

You can find them through the community at Wonderful Web Women, or from a social site such as Facebook. You can start by just connecting with one person to get together a group but make sure that you are all totally focused on business.

Running an effective mastermind group is something that a lot of people don’t do well and it can end up being a group of people who get together, get on really well, talk about business; but there’s no structure and you can after a while think that this is taking a lot of your time where you’re not sure what you’re really getting out of it and wondering if it is indeed helping your business at all.

The structure of a successful mastermind group

Let me share with you a structure that I know works exceptionally well whether it’s for a sixty minute mastermind on the phone, a two hour meeting for breakfast or lunch, a weekend or five day retreat; it’s exactly the same structure at work.

Firstly, set a little bit of a time where you actually get to socialise and catch up on what you’ve being doing because quite often you are with people whose company you really love. Then agree that it’s now down to business!

Determine how many people are in the group and divide the remaining time equally up between them and then go logically through each person so that each can address any issues or problems that they have and then open the discussion up to the group for feedback. Work around the group leaving time at the end for any unfinished business and to organise your next meeting.

It’s a really simple process but if you follow that structure, you end up with a very effective group that makes sure to hold each member accountable. State one thing that you are going to do before the next meeting and make sure that it gets done. That’s where a mastermind group gets powerful. I’ve seen first hand numerous times the impact a mastermind group can have on my business, the business of my mentors and those of my students.

There is nothing more powerful to help you grow your business.

I feel so strongly about it that we help all our customers  join one of our mastermind groups. It doesn’t matter if they have purchased our $47 per month Wonderful Web Women membership or our higher end products and mentoring that run into the thousands, we help them you find other people from our community to support you.

I’m a member of 2 mastermind groups myself and another faculty that meets a few times per year to help each other grow our businesses. I can’t imagine being in business without them.

There is a good reason a Mastermind Group is listed as the 9th Step Toward Riches by Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich.

OK so you know this is something I’m passionate about. Let’s look at what a Mastermind group is and how to run one.

What Is A Mastermind Group?

At its simplest, a mastermind group is 2 or more people who share a similar purpose and meet to help each other achieve that purpose. Now that purpose could be for many things, but here I’ll be talking about the purpose of building successful businesses.

Each of the groups I am personally part of formed to help each other create a successful business. Interestingly, we all have a very strong personal development focus as well. This makes sense really as I’ve found business development to be the fastest tool for personal development I’ve ever experienced.

Mastermind Groups can meet in person, or via a phone meeting. You may meet on a regular basis, such as weekly or every 2 weeks or maybe you only get together for focused days or retreats.

As an example:

• One of my mastermind groups meets for breakfast as a coastal cafe every 2nd Friday.
• Another group used to meet via conference phone every 2 weeks but now we meet for a retreat once per year and a second weekend later in the year (this shows that a mastermind can change how they meet to adapt to the dynamics of the group)
• Another group only meets once a year or more for a structured “closed door” faculty meeting to share latest business building methods.

Rules To Run a Mastermind Group

Over the years I’ve found the perfect structure to run a mastermind group. It doesn’t matter if you meet in person or via phone, the structure works in all situations. We give our customers a detailed structure to follow but here it is in a nutshell;

• The group must agree to why they are meeting. For eg, is it to focus only on business, or is it on personal issues etc
• Anything discussed in the group is confidential. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…not on Facebook
• There needs to be a facilitator for each meeting to keep people on track and time. The facilitator should change each meeting so no-one is seen as the boss
• No whining. The group needs to focus on solutions, not complaining and making excuses as to why a problem exists in the first place.
• No personal criticism. Judge the actions, not the person. Each person must feel safe to discuss their failings.
• Strict time-keeping is essential to make sure each person has an equal opportunity to get help from the group
• You must allocate time at the beginning and end for the group to socialise and catch up on each others lives. If you don’t the group is nowhere near as much fun.
• Be on time. This shows respect for the group
• Laugh a lot. Life’s too short to take it too seriously.

Gives me goosebumps

I’ll share with you their unique approach in a moment but first can I share with you something that just gives me goosebumps? This story is such an affirmation to me that I have created something through Wonderful Web Women that has the potential to change people’s lives. I hope it will also inspire you to grab the opportunities we create for you and use them to create the life you want.

Taking action on opportunities

These are actions Connie and Charly took through Wonderful Web Women. See how each one has built on the other?

1. Wonderful Web Forum:

This is where they met. Connie and Charly both posted to the forum with comments to help another member who had a question on blogging. They had both just started a blog. Connie also commented on posts left by Charly’s daughter.

The message here? Helping others, no matter how simply, helps you build relationships with others. Even the person you are NOT helping.

2. Ask Questions on our calls and the discussion time after each call:

Connie always asks great questions. (As a note, my Mum comes to many of our calls. She’s my greatest fan. She told me she had to be on the call today because Connie would be there. Why? Because Connie always asks good questions?). Charly always offers great tips. They both happened to ring into the same call and struck up a discussion on the line with us.

Message here: Contribute and ask questions. You will get known as a person who thinks and contributes.

3. Join a mastermind group

Charly joined a mastermind group that Connie was part of. This is something we set up and manage for our gold members. This kept them accountable on their goals and they started to develop a level of trust with each other.

Message here: A mastermind group is one of the most powerful ways to achieve your golas and find like-minded people to help you.

4. Wonderful Web Giveaway

In July we ran our first Give Away event as a way to help our members grow their list, and start one if they hadn’t started already. You needed to have a product to give away and Connie didn’t have one. Charly helped Connie create an MP3 product by interviewing her. Charly also gained experience interviewing which she wanted.

Message here: Use opportunities others provide you as deadlines to motivate you to take action. Ask for help if you need it. Often the person helping will benefit just as much as you. NB: we will be running another Giveaway next year and will be launching another exciting collaborative project next month

5. Wonderful Web Women Birthday Competition

When we turned 1 year old a few months ago we ran a competition for members who had created success through Wonderful Web Women. Charly and Connie used this as a deadline for them to launch a one page web site announcing their new venture Stretch Your Mind and Body .

Message here: You don’t have to have your entire business mapped out and perfect. Get started. Put a simple blog web site up (Charly and Connie will help you) and then flesh it out. Again, use opportunities provided by others to motivate you. By the way, they won the competition.

6. A Challenge: An interview and chance to promote a product package

When I read their competition entry, I was so impressed with what Connie and Charly had achieved I offered to interview them. This meant they really had to think through what their new business offered. They also had the opportunity to promote a product to our listeners. They used this as a motivation to put together an incredible package that really helps people new to Internet Marketing (and in fact, experienced people as well) by supporting both the left and right side of the brain. They created videos, audio and even write a book to meet this deadline.

Message here: Take serious action. Even if you have only created something small in the past (such as the MP3 for the giveaway event) don’t let that stop you. Use the lessons you learned and THINK BIG!!

I hope this “anatomy of the path to success” will give you hope and inspiration. The path I have described above has taken less than a year. Often it is hard to see how one small step will lead to something bigger, but that first step is the most important one you will take.

I’m always inspired by people who take action. At the time it may seem like a small step, but it is the first of many that create magnificent things.

Sheila Betker, one of our GOLD members is such a person. I’d like to share her story with you.

BONUS MEMBER MASTERMIND CALL

After Amanda’s call I stayed to faciliate a members mastermind call
for another hour. We covered a huge range of topics including ebay, pros
and cons with using click bank, Payment gateways especially for
Australians. We also talked about the benefits of gold membership and I
revealled some pretty exciting opportunities we have coming up for gold
members – especially an opportunity to create a product together. I
recorded this session and it is already available in the member’s area, under audio and interviews, for gold members to listen to.

My question to you

Tell me (and the rest of our community) – what do you think about the opportunities with eBay? How do you see it fitting in with your plans?

I for one am looking at ways I can tie in my existing digital and physical information products so I can use them to increase the number of people who discover Wonderful Web Women (and make some money too of course). What are your ideas?

Each week the informal discussion after each tele-seminar has grown. Last week it was awesome! For over an hour I led what became a true group mastermind call. Members from around the world shared advice, contacts and got answers to burning questions. Believe it or not, as a result of this informal mastermind for just 60 minutes, I know of at least 2 joint ventures that were formed. I know because I received emails with the details!

Wonderful Web Women you are amazing. This informal discussion is so valuable that I have decided to elevate it to the status it deserves. Now, after every teleseminar, I will stay on the line for another 30 to 60 minutes to faciliate a  free coaching mastermind call. There will be no set topic so feel free to raise whatever your most burning question is. And if you can’t be on the telephone, just submit your question through the webinar page and I will ask your question for you.

This promises to be a very valauable part of our membership which is open to all members – free and Gold. If you can’t be there on the call I will record these sessions and upload them to the member’s area the same day so Gold members can listen in at a time that suits them (I’ll put a summary for you of the topics covered so you can decide which interview to listen to first!).
