Video: Stop Being Perfect

I’m a recovering perfectionist who now lives and breathes the 80/20 rule. You’ll get 80% of your results from just 20% of your efforts so work out what that 20% is and cut out the rest.

Here’s an example. Today I shot 5 videos to be used on my website sales pages and to send you messages while I am away in Thailand for the most of April. One take, minimal script, no edits and nothing fancy. Over and done in 30 minutes then another 30 or so to upload. Sure they’re not slick and professional but they get the message across and they are authentically me. And importantly….they’re done. What have you been putting off because it needs to be perfect?

OK, so some takes just don’t work. Thought I’d share with you a blooper that didn’t even make it past the 5 second mark :)

Video Tips: The Video Camera I bought and why

kodakzi8I’ve had a few people email/tweet me to ask what video camera I bought and why. They’ve been impressed with the high quality of the videos I made while on my US trip.

You can see some of my videos on my Youtube channel (why not subscribe while there?)

The Camera I bought is a Kodak Zi8. This is why I bought it:

  • It fits in my hand bag
  • You can upload direct to Youtube & Facebook
  • It plugs into my USB port to upload and charge
  • You can plug in an external Mic (this feature is usually only available in expensive models)
  • It is great quality for sound and light in the video
  • It is High Definition – figured this is the way of the future (don’t know why really) so may as well be prepared
  • It makes me look professional when I’m very much an amateur
  • It’s cheap (cost me about $170 USD)

Only problem so far:

  • If you want to shoot really high resolution for the big screen, I don’t think it’s good enough. Brilliant at 720dpi for the web though
  • The still camera doesn’t have a flash, which is a drag (my phone does though so I use it for photos)

Are you a talented, intelligent entrepreneur who gets in front of a video camera and turns into someone who looks and sounds like a moron? There’s something about the pressure of a video camera and the knowledge that it will be plastered across the Internet that can turn you into a waffling amateur.

Yep. I’m one of them!

This week Ludwina Dautovic shared some great tips to make you look and sound like a pro. Try this when you are filming your next 3 to 10 minute video to go on your web site.
